A total hip replacement (THR) surgery is a very common joint replacement surgery done in India whereby the diseased cartilage and bone of the hip joint is surgically replaced with artificial materials caled implant which is geerally US FDA approved. Total hip joint replacement involves surgical removal of the diseased ball and socket and replacing them with a metal ball and stem inserted into the femur bone and an artificial plastic cup socket.
Patients with damaged hip joint either due to Trauma, wear-and-tear arthritis, Osteoarthritis or any other cause should consider hip replacement to get rid of the pain and diminishing daily function in order to maintain the quality of life . Osteoarthritis damages the slick cartilage that covers the ends of bones and helps joints move smoothly. Patient is generally made to walk next day after the hip replacement surgery in India.
In Hip Replacement Surgery, the surgeon will make an incision over the front or the side of your hip and cut through the layers of tissue. The Diseased and damaged bone and cartilage are removed leaving the healthy bone intact. The surgeon will then implant the prosthetic socket into the pelvic bone to replace the damaged socket. The round ball on top of the femur is then replaced with a ceramic ball with a stem below. This stem is then fixed into the femur bone with or without the use of bone cement. The bone cement can have complications and therefore without cement surgery is always better but is not always possible. If hip replacement surgery is done at a younger age then revision hip replacement may be required after 15-20 years.

The patient is put on a rehab programme within one day of the surgery while still being hospitalized. The rehab programme has to continue for a period of 2-3 months after the surgery to get maximum benefits from the surgery. Metal implants are now not used and ceramic implants are popular which are compatible with investigations like MRI and also do not cause problems with Metal Detectors at Malls and Airports.
