A hernia occurs when the contents of a body cavity bulge out of the area where they are normally contained. These contents, usually portions of intestine or abdominal fatty tissue, are enclosed in the thin membrane that naturally lines the inside of the cavity.
There are various types of hernias like Inguinal, Femoral, Umblical, Obturator, Incisional, Epigastric etc. All hernias should be repaired to avoid the possibility of future intestinal strangulation. In most of the cases hernia surgery is not an emergency but in case it is a twisted hernia then it is an acute case and needs emergency surgery. Hernia can happen at any age, incase of children it is always better to consult a paediatric surgeon if surgery is required.
Most of the hernias whether inguinal, incisional, umblical etc are caused by a combination of pressure and an opening or weakness of muscle or connective tissue. The pressure pushes an organ or tissue through the opening or weak spot. Sometimes the muscle weakness that causes hernia is present at birth but more often it occurs later in life. Anything that causes an increase in abdominal pressure can cause a hernia, including obesity, lifting heavy objects, diarrhea or constipation, or persistent coughing or sneezing. Poor nutrition, smoking, and overexertion can weaken muscles and contribute to the likelihood of a hernia.
There are two types of hernia surgery that are generally done viz. hernioraphhy and hernioplasty. In hernioraphhy surgery the general and laparoscopic surgeon or in case of paediatric cases a paediatric surgeon repairs the hernia without using any implant like mesh etc whereas in hernioplasty our surgeon will treat hernia with the use of mesh and tacker. Our team of laparoscopic and paediatric surgeons are experienced in operating all types of hernias. They decide on examination whether the hernia surgery has to be with or without implant depending upon the condition of the patient.
Surgery remains the mainstay of treatment for hernia. Surgery can be Open or Laparoscopic, while with the advances in medical technology & lesser complications laparoscopy has become the preferred mode of treatment. However in certain cases an open surgery could be a better option to go for. Infact as per the recent results open hernia surgery has shown better results as compared to laparoscopic surgey. Laparoscopic Hernia Repair is a technique to fix tears in the abdominal wall (muscle) using small incisions, telescopes and a patch (mesh). The recovery time in open surgery would be around 1 week while for laparoscopic surgery it would be 3-4 days.
