Brain Tumour Surgery

Posted on September 16, 2022

Abnormal growth of the brain cells results in a Brain Tumour. Brain Tumour can be benign or malignant. The best diagnosis for brain tumour is a Contrast CT Scan of the Brain or a Plain MRI of the Brain. The best test to find out whether a tumour is benign or malignant is a biopsy but getting tissue from the brain tumour to do biopsy is not always possible. In most of the cases of brain tumour surgical removal of the tumour is the best line of treatment. Once the tumour is removed from the brain, the tissue is sent for biopsy to confirm whether the tumour is benign or malignant. If the tumour is found to be malignant then further treatment might be required. Since brain is one of the most complex organ, any tumour in the brain is extremely difficult to operate and very high skills on the part of the neurosurgeon are required to successfully remove the tumour. Dr SK Gupta is one of the finest brain tumour surgeons in India.

The Brain Tumours are classfied on the basis of their nature as well as their location in the brain. Brain tumours are also classified in grades from I to IV. In adults the common types of brain tumours found are astrocytoma, meningioma and oligodendroglioma. In children the common brain tumours are medulloblastoma, astrocytoma, ependymoma and brain stem glioma. Brain stem tumours are most difficult to operate and have the lowest success rate. The average success rate of brain stem tumours in India is close to 90%. Very highly advanced microscopes are used to operate the most complex of the brain tumours for good results.

Some of the brain tumours are best treated without surgery using Gamma Knife which is a non interventional procedure of burning the tumour using very sophisticated radiation. Mostly tumours measuring less than 1 cm in size can be treated through Gamma Knife.

The average cost of Brain Tumour Surgery in India ranges between Rs. 2.5 – 3.5 Lacs depending upon the type of the tumour. The cost of Gamma Knife would be Rs. 3.5 Lacs. In some cases both brain surgery and gamma knife are to be used one after the other and the cost can go up in such cases. The hospital stay for any kind of brain tumour surgery would be 5-7 days. The cost of treatment and the other costs are lowest in the entire world for such a high quality of treatment and this brings a large number of patients to India for such high end surgeries. Dr SK Gupta heads the Neurosurgery department at our hospital and he is considered as one of the finest brain and spine surgeon in Moradabad Uttar Pradesh.
